Powers of Ten. 'A wonderful demonstration of the scale of the universe'

Updated: Nov 19, 2024

It was back on 1994 when looking for material for introductory courses for the dental curriculum I discovered Powers of 10, the mind-blowing picture book based upon their 1977 video by the same name, showing the relations between the macro and the micro scales of cosmos and how do we relate at different levels. The book was good. I remember taking Ekthachrome slides from each page to use them in class with the students, and I specially remember their faces when going through them, in a mixture of surprise and amazement that you only see when you discover something that has always been there, but for reason you didn’t realize before.

When I watched this copy of the video this afternoon during my commute, with its original narration and background music (so kitsch, so ‘70s. I loved it). As the powers of ten were changing, I experienced the same amazement and surprise again. I guess that other travelers in my train were concerned seeing my face. Here is a copy of the video posted on YouTube. I hope you enjoy it and share with me this feeling of dizziness after the video concludes and one needs to redefine basic parameters like near, far, big, or small.
